One and Two Weeks Pregnant

The way a pregnancy is dated, you are not actually pregnant during the first two weeks of pregnancy. When you are “one week pregnant”, you are actually having your last period and “two weeks pregnant” is the week after your last menstrual period. Why? Because dating the exact time that you conceived is extremely difficult and is inaccurate.

Conception is usually during week three, as the majority of women will release their next egg at the end of being two weeks pregnant. However, this differs among women as the menstrual cycle differs. The average cycle is 28 days but it could be as short as 22 days or as long as 36 days.

Trying for a Baby

If you are attempting to fall pregnant, it is worth following many of the rules that pregnant women follow. This involves cutting down on your alcohol – no drinking anything all together – and taking folic acid. During one week and two weeks pregnant, you can also follow the signs that you are ovulating to determine the best time to try for a baby.

The Ovulation Cycle

If you have a regular menstrual cycle, you will be able to determine your ovulation dates more accurately than if you have an irregular cycle. The length of your cycle can be determined by looking at the first day of your last period and counting to the first day of your next period. This typically happens 14 days into a 28 day cycle but it does differ between women.

There are a number of ovulation tests available from pharmacies and supermarkets. Many of these are very reliable and work similar to a pregnancy test. They use the level of hormones in your urine to determine whether you are ovulating or not.

The Best Time to Conceive

Just because you are ovulating during the “third week of pregnancy” does not mean that you should limit your intercourse to those dates. To get the best chance of conceiving, you will need to consider just how long the sperm and the egg survive for. Sperm typically lasts between three and five days after leaving a man’s body but the egg only has 24 hours once is it released. This will mean that successfully conceiving on the day of ovulation is tricky so you need to plan ahead.

There are ways to tell when you are ovulating and one of those is through taking your basal temperature. Your body temperature will increase when you are ovulating – at your most fertile – however this does not guarantee that it will work.
