Your baby continues to develop and grow at seven weeks pregnant. The
vital organs are still developing and the embryo is about the size of a
macadamia nut. The baby grows quickly during this time but you will not realise
it just by looking at you.
Your Baby’s Development
Your baby’s facial features are developing in pregnancy week seven.
The mouth and tongue start to form during this time, along with parts of the
eyes, such as the retina and the lens. There will be small pits in the face for
the ears and nose to develop.
The heart continues to beat strong and will now pump blood around
your baby’s small body. This is also the time that blood cells will start to be
made as the liver’s development continues. Other muscles also develop when you
are seven weeks pregnant but you will not feel movement yet; this usually
occurs during the second trimester.
Changes in You
If you are a first time mum, it is unlikely that you will notice any
physical changes. However, if you have had a baby before, you may find that you
start to put on weight around your middle. You may only notice because your
clothes are starting to get uncomfortable. However, you will not have a bump
yet and it is likely that you will not start showing to others for another few
weeks. If anything, you will feel and look bloated, like you would usually
around the time of your period.
It is likely that you will gain another one to two pounds during
pregnancy week seven. Of course, this depends on your morning sickness and the
amount that you are eating. There is no need to worry about weight gain at this
point in time as there is plenty of time still to gain the weight that you need
to support your growing little one.
Symptoms at Pregnancy Week
Seven
When you are seven weeks pregnant, there are new symptoms that you
may notice. One of those is more saliva. This is very common in those who
suffer from morning sickness and is linked to the increase in hormones in your
body. It is thought that those who produce more saliva are likely to suffer
from heartburn. The saliva is the body’s way to counter the stomach acid.
Another common symptom is a metallic taste in the mouth. This may
also be linked to morning sickness. This is another symptom that is linked to
your growing level of hormones and should disappear by the second trimester.
Thirdly, again linked to the hormones, is a frequent need to
urinate. Many pregnant women find that they need to urinate often during the
first and third trimesters of pregnancy. Your kidneys will be working extra
hard during this time as there is suddenly more blood to pump around your
system. Along with that, your uterus will be growing and may place more
pressure on your bladder.
Urinary Tract Infections
and Pregnancy
Pregnant women are more likely to suffer from urinary tract
infections and this is something to look out for. Frequent urination at
pregnancy week seven should not worry you, unless there is a burning sensation
or some stinging while you urinate. This is a sign of a UTI. You should also
look out for blood or mucus in your urine and any cramping around your lower
abdomen or tenderness around the area of your bladder.
You can reduce your risk of UTI during pregnancy by ensuring that
you drink plenty of water. Yes, this will make you need to urinate more but it
will help to keep your system clear. You should also ensure that you urinate
when you need to instead of trying to hold it in. If you do find that you have a UTI
when you are seven weeks pregnant – or at any time – ensure that you seek
immediate medical attention to avoid any other problems or complications.
