At 27 weeks pregnant, you will be getting close to two pounds – well
your baby will be. Remember that this is just an average weight. Girls usually
weigh much less than boys do and it will also depend on just how much fat your
baby has managed to pile on.
Your Baby’s Development at
27 Weeks Pregnant
There is still a lot happening for your baby. The reproductive
organs are moving into their rightful places and will be there by the end of
the week. All the follicles that produce eggs in the ovaries will have been
developed in a girl and the testicles will have moved into the scrotum for most
boys.
Your baby’s eyes will have opened by 27 weeks pregnant – that is an
amazing 18 weeks of having the eyes shut! There is still a lot of development
that needs to be done for the eyes and a lot of this will continue even into
the first couple of years of your baby’s life. The retina will start to mature
during this week and your baby’s eyes will be able to see light and the brain
will see images. This is the first stages of sight. If you shine a light on
your belly, there are chances that your baby will move to see what it is.
Changes in You at
Pregnancy Week 27
For you, at 27 weeks pregnant, your uterus is still inching up the
stomach. Your belly will get bigger each week at an alarming rate. Your partner
is likely to comment but that is just because he is so proud of the bundle of
joy growing inside. Spend some time with your partner and talk to your baby.
Let him or her pick up on your voices.
At 27 weeks, space is starting to get a little tighter and you will
start to feel that any movements are more uncomfortable. Some of the kicks may
be painful at this time – especially if it hits your bladder, kidneys or ribs.
There are chances that your partner will be able to feel the movements
relatively easily just by feeling your belly – this is definitely something to
do together and is a big milestone as expectant parents.
You have 13 weeks to go until
your due date but some babies are born early. It makes sense to start learning
about the signs of labor now and preparing for the hospital runs. You will also
want to start reading up about Braxton Hicks contractions as they may start any
time soon. Pack your hospital bag now; it makes it easier to stock up on
anything that you are running low on or getting the last minute things.
Symptoms at 27 Weeks
Pregnant
As you get into your third trimester, it is likely that you will be
feeling a little more tired than usual. This is common at 27 weeks pregnant.
Fatigue is something that hits pregnant women during the first and third
trimester. This is simply due to the size of your uterus and the extra weight
that you are carrying. There are chances that your sleep will be disrupted too,
which will not help you get the energy that you need.
Leg cramps are common at Pregnancy week 27. The reason for this is
unknown. You may be fine one minute and suddenly – usually in the middle of the
night! – get a cramp that is near impossible to get rid of. I had this in an
earlier stage of labour and my partner thought I’d gone into early labour the
pain was that bad.
Stay hydrated during pregnancy as this is likely a common reason for
the leg cramps and any spasms. You should also lay on your left side when you
are 27 weeks pregnant. This helps to keep the blood circulating since no arteries
are blocked.
