Are you struggling to conceive? It may seem silly, but it can take up to a year for healthy couples to successfully conceive.

Yes, really! 12 months!

So, if you’ve only been trying for a few months, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. But I know you don’t want it to take 12 months to conceive. You want your baby yesterday, right?

Well, here are four effective tips to get pregnant; recommended by the experts.

Work Out Your Ovulation Cycle

It’s the most important thing you can do when trying to conceive. As a woman, you need to know when you ovulate. This is the time that your body is ready to get pregnant. And you only really have a 24 hour window from when your body releases the egg to the point that it settles and dies.

That’s not a long time, at all!

This is why you need to plan in advance. You need to know the period before you ovulate, so you can get ready. Sperm will last up to five days, although the experts recommend three days before.

During your ovulation window, you should have intercourse every two to three days.

You can monitor your ovulation cycle with Baby Center's ovulation calculator.

Use the Ovulation Tests

Many people—and I know friends who do this—recommend the ovulation tests. You will need a rough idea of when you’re ovulating, but the tests will tell you whether your calculations based on your menstrual cycle are right.

These are great if you have odd cycles like I do. One friend suggested that I try the tests for a couple of weeks when I think I’m ovulating, so that I get the start of the window exactly.

Yes, we’re trying to conceive.

ClearBlue is a highly recommended brand when it comes to buying ovulation tests, and you can get 20 tests here.

Have the Right Diet

It’s important that you both help your bodies be in the right state for conceiving. Yes, that’s right. Both of you!

It’s important to cut back (preferably out completely) on alcohol, stop smoking and focus on a healthy and balanced diet. Women need to make sure they get enough folic acid and vitamin D before they find out their pregnant. A lot goes on in the first couple of weeks after conception!

Men should avoid heat as much as possible. That means avoiding the hot tubs and saunas. Sperm can’t stand the heat!

Relax!

Stop worrying so much about it. Stress will prevent you from conceiving, and that’s what constant monitoring and worrying is causing. Remember that this should be fun!

Enjoy yourself and relax. It’s not going to be long until you have a little bouncing baby who is zapping up all your energy! If you already have a child, it’s not going to be long until you have another working with your first one to make it even worse.

How Long Should You Wait When Trying to Conceive?

It can take up to a year, but most healthy couples will get pregnant within three months. This relies on a normal menstrual cycle and you actively trying throughout that time.

Doctors will run tests if you have not conceived within 12 months of actively trying. However, there are times that this will be done earlier. It could be if:

  • You have a history of complications conceiving
  • You’re over 35
  • You have other medical issues
  • You’re overweight
  • And various other reasons

If you are worried for any reason, talk to your doctor.

Good luck and enjoy it!
