Can You Really Work at Home with Kids Around?

I've often shared tips on how I work at home with kids around me. It's not easy, but it is possible. However, there are sacrifices that have to be made here and there (both with work and with family). It is a lot easier if you can work without the distraction of kids.

Many people will tell you to put your kids into daycare or hire a nanny. It's the only way to effectively get work done. People tell you to treat your business as you would with any out of the home job: you'd seek out childcare if you worked for someone else, right?

Honestly, this is the best option, especially if you have a business that involves meetings, interviews, and a lot of deadlines. My husband is now a stay at home dad and does the childcare during the day. I get a block of hours just for myself, where I get to work. No distractions means I get a lot more done. But I still have my kids around.

If you don't have that option, you can make working at home work with the kids around. Here are a few tips:

  • Opt for just a few hours a day childcare/babysitting for meetings and pressured deadlines
  • Work around the kids' napping and sleeping schedules
  • Set up a routine that works for you all
  • Get the kids involved in some way as they get older
  • Work around the kids' school times
I've shared how I managed to work at home with kids around in the past.
